Erika Hock

Biography

(b. 1981, Dshangi-Dsher, Kyrgyzstan) Erika Hock is an artist whose practice fluidly crosses between sculpture and architecture, with a notable interest in tapestries and furniture. Her work explores the intersections between history, society, and culture. She studied Fine Arts at the Kunstakademie Münster and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany. Born in 1981, Hock's work is also inspired by the art movements of the 1990s, particularly the emergence of the Young British Artists (YBAs) in the UK. Figures such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, and Marc Quinn became known for their provocative tactics and the use of shocking materials. Hock combines elements of Modernism (such as Art Deco) with influences from Postmodernism (such as those of Ettore Sottsass). Her work examines how both artistic movements can be interpreted and applied to contemporary contexts. On a narrative level, she contrasts private furniture with the public spectacle of an exhibition, adding humor and rhetorical exaggeration. Her work is characterized by a cinematic eye, where objects are placed under dramatic lighting, presenting them almost as movie stars. Among her most recent exhibitions are their participation in the prestigious ARCO Madrid fair and in renowned galleries such as L21 Gallery in Palma and COSAR in Düsseldorf. They have showcased their work in significant solo exhibitions like "Unfit" and "Cambio de Escena" at L21 Gallery (Barcelona, 2024), and at international venues such as Museum Unter Tage / Situation Kunst in Bochum (2023) and Es Baluard in Palma (2023).
